Freshness Preserving Storage Of Oranges

Fruits, especially the fresh ones, are considered essential in healthy living. They provide the nutrients needed by the body for vital growth and functioning.

Fruits that are rich in vitamins and fiber like oranges are better taken whole than their juice counterpart. This is because the whole orange fruit contains the fiber necessary to balance its sugar content for the healthy metabolism of the body. Because of its nutritional value it is very important to set up a proper storage of oranges in order to preserve the fruit’s freshness. If not properly stored, oranges could perish quicker than usual and lose their health enhancing capacity.

The key in the protective storage of fresh fruits like oranges is the right temperature. Colder temperatures in general have the capability of impeding the decaying process of fruits. Temperatures, though that are too cold chill the fruit too much and so causing it undue damage.

While storage in low temperature preserves the oranges taking it out of the refrigerator actually hastens the deterioration process especially when left in warmer temperature for a long period of time. Sustaining cold temperature storage is of extreme importance for orange freshness preservation so that taking them out of the fridge should only be done when they are ready to be consumed.

Preserving orange freshness actually begins not at refrigeration but at the point of harvest. Proper care must be taken that the oranges are not bruised because bruising speeds up fruit decay.

Newly harvested oranges must be kept clean at all times. The water used in cleaning the fresh oranges must be free of any microbial presence that may contaminate the fruits. Dirt and dust must be completely removed from the orange fruits because they serve as magnet to destructive pests, germs and insects.

Newly harvested oranges must be immediately placed in adequately protected containers. Unnecessary delay in proper storage may shorten the fresh life of the oranges. Extra care must be observed so that the harvested oranges are not damaged nor contaminated during the handling and transport.

When storing the newly harvested oranges in cold temperature storage, remember to maintain the critical temperature at all times. Uncontrolled further lowering in temperature would cause “chill damage” that may be unrecoverable.

Proper storage of oranges also requires the right humidity of about 90% which could be facilitated by sprinkling the oranges with water before refrigerating and then covering the container with plastic once it has adapted to the prescribed cold temperature.
